Throughout September and October, we were busy with our campus roadshow dubbed the Grow Cebu Music School Tour in partnership with Create Cebu and supported by Mactan Cebu International Airport and in cooperation with Havaianas Philippines.
The schools we visited were Southwestern University – PHINMA, Cebu Institute of Technology-University, Maria Montessori International School, University of Cebu-Banilad, University of San Jose-Recoletos, and St. Theresa’s College.
We had our very own GrowBot, designed by The Backbone Company who accompanied us along this trip.
The school tour was brought to life by music advocate Paulo Varela, who was substituted by the wonderful Janna J Ingan once during the University of Cebu-Banilad run.
22 Tango Records COO Cattski Espina explained that the main objective of the school tour was to educate and inspire the audience to listen more to homegrown music and even include them in your Spotify playlists.
Music influencers Bomba Press founder Dexter Sy and Kadasig founder Jude Gitamondoc talked about the why behind their organizations, and what they’re doing to help the music community.
Testimonials by music advocates like Honeydrop and Hey, It’s Your Birthday manager Trena Guerrero and photographer Zach Aldave showed the students that it’s possible to contribute to the music community even if they are not musicians or singer-songwriters.
Artists Vincent Eco, Lourdes Maglinte, Mary Anchit, Clarence Mongado of Missing Filemon, Wonggoys, Jerika Teodorico, Honeydrop, David Wilde, Luis Quibranza III of Bethany, and Mandaue Nights shared their experiences being musicians and artists in Cebu, and treated the students to a performance.
The school tour culminated with DemoCrazy Live last October 21 at A Space. It’s an open mic with a twist, where aspiring (or experienced) singer-songwriters can share their original songs in their rawest form.
All of this is a prelude to the Grow Cebu Music Summit, a day-long celebration of our homegrown talents and community, happening on January 13, 2018. Details soon!
As long as we are alive and we’re given the opportunity to do our part, we will continue driving our purpose of building a sustainable music community towards fulfillment.
A big thank you to our partners: Mactan Cebu International Airport, Havaianas, Handuraw Pizza, Efficascent, Chameleon Concepts, The Backbone Company, Kadasig, Room Eleven Recording Studio, Bomba Press, A SPACE Cebu, Sonder Films, and Indie Cebu.
