Our seventh demo feature is Hate Love Forever by Renzo Sy.

What Inspired you to write this song?

Me and my friend had a conversation once about taking a break from relationships and all that. I can’t really disclose what happened to my friend that made him think that way, but that conversation eventually led me into saying “I hope you don’t hate love forever.” That’s when a switch flipped inside my brain that got me thinking, “Wow. That actually sounds quite nice for something that sounds so edgy”.

Describe the process/experience of creating this song from start to finish?

It was quite a confusing process trying to write this song. Going into it, I was trying to make the vibe of the song quite depressing and sad but for some reason I started playing a pretty upbeat chord progression. I decided to go with it just for the laughs and I ended up writing a happy-go-lucky verse that I actually really liked and then from there I wrote the pre-chorus (which has the main title of the song) and the chorus. I probably spent a good 30 minutes writing the first half of the song down and I immediately liked it. I let the unfinished product sit for a good two weeks before going back at it again to finally finish the song. I think it turned out pretty nice. A little cheesy, (definitely a little cheese) but pretty nice.

Do you do something or listen to someone to kick start your creativity?

I don’t usually do anything in particular to spark my creativity when it comes to writing music. I usually just pick up a guitar as soon as I think of a lyric or melody that sounds cool in the moment. If I don’t have a guitar on-hand, I try to find a secluded place where I can hum the melody into my phone so I can work on it later in the day.

Does songwriting come naturally to you?

I wouldn’t exactly say songwriting comes naturally to me. Sure, now I know the basics of what a song is, how I want it to sound, and how I want my personal style to encapsulate the theme I’m going for, but two years ago, when I was still completely brand new to the song writing thing, it was definitely something that wasn’t natural. The first few songs I ever wrote were definitely not good but I just kept writing. Eventually, after a good year of writing straight up garbage, I started writing pretty decent and catchy songs that people actually liked. And I knew that people really did like them because those were the same people who listened to the songs I made when I was still starting out. I guess I just needed the bad songs to come out in order for the good ones to start flowing.

Who are your biggest influences musically?

This sounds pretty basic of me but I have to say that my biggest influence musically has to be Ed Sheeran. I wouldn’t say that I base a lot of my music on his music but his thought process when it comes to songwriting is definitely a huge influence on my creative thought process. I believe it was a clip from an interview with Ed that I got the courage to actually start writing music. He talked about the “10,000 Hour Rule” and how it applies to writing music. Basically, it meant that the first few hours of writing music is always going to be trash. People will always write bad songs at the start. Some get lucky but the majority are pretty unlucky. However, If you keep at it, good music will almost always eventually come through, and come through it did for me. Two years after watching that clip, I’ve written a good number of songs that I’m actually proud of. To say that he is the only artist that inspires my songwriting would be wrong because I listen to a wide range of genres but there’s just too many artists to credit for that; from Post Malone to Phum, from Drake to John Mayer, from J. Cole to even K-Pop, I’ve listened to a lot of them. To put it in the simplest of terms, music inspires my music.

Listen to HATE LOVE FOREVER by Renzo Sy:

Hate Love Forever Lyrics:

Verse 1

I used to have a lot of trouble

I used to fall I’d always stumble

Around for love

Was never type to love

It’s not because I’m weird or dumb

It’s not because I’m looking for fun

It’s cos I’ve never seen

What true love could really be

Pre-chorus/Hook:

But why do I see everything in you

Yeah, with the you the skies are blue

I see the birds flying too

Oh, how could I ever hate love forever

With what you show me

What do you see in me

Chorus:

Is it the way I look at your face

Or ‘cos I took time to say

And explain why I just want a day

We could go anywhere

Or we could just stop and stare

At the sky up above

I’ll leave it all up to you, love

Verse 2

I’m used to all my nights alone

I’m used to my guitar at home

Being the only one

I run to when I’m done

With long and heavy struggling days

But now you seem to be the one

That stays running round my head

Wondering if you’re sad in bed

Pre-Chorus/Hook:

But why do I see everything in you

Yeah, with the you the skies are blue

I see the birds flying too

And how could I ever hate love forever

With what you show me

Oh what do you see in me

Chorus:

Is it the way i look at your face

Or cos I took time to say

And explain why I just want a date

We could go anywhere

Or we could just stop and stare

At the sky up above

I’ll leave it all up to you

Bridge:

Love

Oh it’s a such a funny thing

You running around my dreams

Oh who’d have known

That love

Oh would be the only thing

That my heart would only think

Cos you’re the one

Pre-Chorus/Hook:

‘guess that’s why I see everything in you

Cos with the you the skies are blue

I see the birds flying too

And how could I ever hate love forever

With what you show me

Oh what do you see in me

Ending Chorus:

Is it the way i look at your face

Or cos I took time to say

And explain why I just want a date

We could go anywhere

Or we could just stop and stare

At the sky up above

I’ll leave it all up to you, love
